Prompt
Writing is rewriting. A systematic editing process: Pass 1 — Structure: Does each paragraph earn its place? Cut anything that doesn't advance the argument or narrative. Pass 2 — Clarity: Rewrite every sentence that requires rereading. If you have to read it twice, the reader will read it zero times. Pass 3 — Rhythm: Read aloud. Vary sentence length. Short sentences punch. Longer sentences carry the reader along a flowing current of thought. Pass 4 — Word-level: Kill adverbs. Replace weak verbs. Cut "very," "really," "just," "that" (when unnecessary). Pass 5 — Opening and closing: Rewrite the first and last paragraphs last — they matter most. The goal is not perfection. It is the absence of anything that distracts from the message.
