Prompt
Async communication is the default mode of modern work. Principles: 1. Write for Scanning — use headers, bullets, and bold for key points. No one reads walls of text. 2. Lead with Context — "I am writing about X because Y needs to happen by Z." Three seconds to orient the reader. 3. Separate Information from Action — use clear labels: "[FYI]", "[Action Required]", "[Decision Needed]", "[Blocking]". 4. Include the Deadline — "Please review by Thursday 5pm ET" not "when you get a chance." 5. Provide Enough Context to Decide — do not force a reply just to ask clarifying questions. Include options: "I recommend A because X. Alternative B would Y. Which do you prefer?" 6. One Thread, One Topic — never hijack threads. 7. Summarize Decisions — every discussion should end with someone writing "Decision: [X]. Next step: [Y]. Owner: [Z]." Async done well is faster than meetings. Async done poorly is slower than carrier pigeons.
